Hatchery Hill offers a comprehensive educational program. The core curriculum includes instruction in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, health, physical education, Spanish, art and music. Much of the instruction is conducted in thematic units which incorporate several of the content areas. In addition to a full day kindergarten program, student support services include basic skills instruction, a Reading Recovery program, speech, guidance, and a Pupil Assistance/504 Committee. Hatchery Hill houses a district class for pre-school special needs students. Instruction is provided for students who speak English as a Second Language (ESL.) Summer programs, Jumpstart II and Jumpstart ESL, are also provided to assist students.
Student progress is communicated through report cards and parent conferences. Student portfolios are utilized to assess individual progress. During the 2000-2001 year, two building objectives were developed. Math skills and concepts in grade one; and self-management skills in grade four. Post-test results indicated that both objectives were achieved.Students have received awards in community, county, and state contests. Individual achievement is acknowledged through participation in the President's Academic Award Program. Awards are also presented yearly by the school and the PTA. Students have the opportunity to participate in various contests such as the PTA Scholastic Festival , and the "I Know All 50 Program", a locally developed award-winning program to enhance geography awareness.
Parents participate in decision making through the School Based Planning Team comprised of parents, teachers and the principal. Parents can share fun and learning with their children via programs such as Family Reading, Family Arts and Creativity, Family Math, Family Computers, Family Science, and Family Connections. A school volunteer program has been in operation for several years. Parent involvement programs at Hatchery Hill were honored with a "Best Practice" award by the New Jersey State Department of Education, and with statewide recognition from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. The school has also received a "Best Practice" award for professional development.
