Language ArtsLanguage Arts are integrative, interactive ways of communicating that develop through reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. The Second Grade Language Arts program includes phonics, fluency, comprehension, spelling , grammar, and writing instruction. Language Arts is specifically taught in a ninety minute block of time, however it's skills are fused into all other subjects throughout the day. Second Grade students will use their Language Arts ability to think logically and creatively, express ideas, formulate and answer questions, and participate meaningfully in spoken, written, and non verbal communications.
Willow Grove's Second Graders begin to use the writing process to write for a variety of purposes. They utilize the 6+1 Traits of Writing.
Our Second Grade students move through six themed units from Houghton Mifflin. Their lessons are carefully planned to ensure that all our children meet and exceed the Second Grade Language Arts Common Core Standards. Students are assessed both formally and informally. Daily progress is evaluated from teacher observation. The Second Grade Students take formal theme tests and skill quizzes to evaluate their individual progress.
