Comprehensive Health & Physical Education
The Hackettstown School District believes that a comprehensive Health and Physical Education program allows students to acquire the knowledge and skills of what is most essential to become individuals who possess health and physical literacy and pursue a life of wellness by developing the habits necessary to live healthy, productive lives that positively impact their families, schools and communities.
In accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:35-35 and Board Policy No. 2422, the Board of Education requires all students to participate in a comprehensive, sequential, health and physical education program aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) that emphasizes the natural interdisciplinary connection between wellness and health and physical education. The primary focus of the NJSLS is the development of knowledge and skills that influence healthy behaviors within the context of self, family, school, and the local and global community.

Comprehensive Health Opt Out Information
The District recognizes and respects that parents/guardians are the primary, health, family life and sex educator for their children and that some families prefer to have these conversations privately. Therefore, in accordance with the Parents Rights to Conscience Act of 1979 and Board Policy 2422:
[A]ny student whose parent presents to the Principal a signed statement that any part of the instruction in health, family life education, or sex education is in conflict with his/her conscience or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs shall be excused from that portion of the course where such instruction is being given and no penalties as to credit or graduation shall result.
As a result, if you do not object to your child participating in the comprehensive, sequential, health and physical education program aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS), you need not to do anything further.
However, if you do object and DO NOT want your child to participate in any part of the health, family life education, or sex education as it is in conflict with your conscience or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs, you must notify the District in writing by printing the below form, completing and submitting to the building Principal.
